Auction mart sales round-up: Belted Galloways to 6,200gns, new centre record for commercial cows and calves, and steady demand for store cattle

A round-up of this week's livestock sales, including Skipton, Welshpool, Lanark and Hexham marts

A top bid of 6,200gns led Skipton's Belted Galloway show and sale, held on behalf of the Belted Galloway Cattle Society where multiple consignments sold to four-figure prices.

Sale leader, the highest bid in the event's three-year history, was a third prize bull and sole entry from James and Helen Rebanks, Matterdale. April 2023-born Racy Ghyll Aldo was by Mochrum Colonel, bred on the Mochrum Estate in Dumfries and Galloway and a half-brother to the 20,000gns Racy Ghyll Jay 2, which matched the breed record price last autumn. Out of the home-bred Racy Ghyll Brighteye, Aldo was bought by Gratnar Farm Partnership, North Bovey, Newton Abbott.

Making 5,900gns next was the supreme champion from Chris and Christine Ryder's, Scaife Hall herd, Blubberhouses, making it a hat-trick after also standing supreme champions at the first two breed highlights. This year's winner was Scaifehall Monty, an April 2023-born son of main stock bull, Mochrum Lachlan, also sire of their 2023 and 2024 title winners. Out of home-bred Scaifehall Imelda, Monty was knocked down to D.R. and G. Snow, Glasshouses.

Next at 5,600gns was second prize bull, Croasdale Unbelievabull, from Mick Handley's Croasdale herd, Slaidburn. An August 2023-born son of Lomond Whiskey Galore, out of the home-bred Croasdale Indie, it found a new home in Clapham with Ingleborough Farming.

Lachlan was also the sire of the reserve supreme champion, Scaifehall Maximus, out of Scaifehall Irma, which made 4,700gns when joining Storeton Hall Farm, Birkenhead, Wirral.

A 4,000gns bid secured red and white bull Blackburn Ace, a second-prize winner from Lincolnshire breeders Ben and Becky Burgess-Smith. A son of Shelseys Willie Redman, out of Lineside Pippa; bred by Mrs Burgess-Smith's late father Peter Burgess, it joined J.B. and V.E.L. Clowes, Morley.

Another from Messrs Handley topped the females with the female champion, an October 2022-born, free from the bull haltered heifer, Croasdale Tanya, by Cairnsmore Prince Charming and out of Croasdale Quartz. It sold to Ellie Hargreaves, Walton-le-Dale.

Averages: Bulls, £4,770; heifers £1,727.

Heifers with calves sell to £5,400

At the show and sale of breeding cattle at Barnard Castle, the day's top price of £5,400 was for the second prize heifer and calf, a British Blue heifer with a Limousin calf from with John McAlister and Rebecca Dobson, West Thomaston, Bonnybridge.

The entry of 61 feeding bulls at 271 store cattle topped at £3,900 for a Limousin heifer from J.W. Dent and Sons, Lartington.

Steers sold to £2,600 for the steer champion, a British Blue from J.W. Dent and bulls to £2,500 for the feeding bulls champion, which also came from Messrs Dent.

Top price per head for OTM cattle was £3,097 for R. Hutchinson, Bowes, for a Limousin cow and top price per kilo was 378 pence per kilo for Messrs Dent.

Penrith store trade tops at £2,555

The sale of store cattle and feeding bulls at Penrith saw 152 entries forward, with trade topping at £2,555 for an 18-month-old British Blue cross Hereford bullock from I.S. and C.A. Mounsey, Town Head, selling to D. Barker, Scarborough.

A pair of 24-month-old Aberdeen-Angus bullocks, non- farm assured, from G. and E.A. Hird, Westray, achieved £,2495.

G. and E.A. Harrison, Mount Clifton, sold three Aberdeen-Angus bullocks to average £2,215, topping at £2,285, which sold to I. Forsyth.

Leading in the averages was C.A. Cannon, Friarbiggin, selling a consignment of Limousin bullocks and heifers at between 17 and 18 months old to average £2,215, topping at £2,495.7.

Young suckler-bred heifers, six-months-old, sold to £1,765.

Commercial cows and calves see high of £9,800

Cows and calves at Welshpool sold to a £9,800 high, a new centre record for commercial cows and calves, with an overall average of £5,301 achieved for all the outfits sold.

Sale leader at £9,800 was a British Blue cross cow and calf from G.L., J.S. and A. Howells, Llandysul.

Another British Blue cross outfit from M.M. and R. Morris, Maestanyglwyden, made £9,500, with I.P. and E. Jones, Maestyddyn, also selling a British Blue cross cow and calf to £7,000.

Making £5,000 was a Limousin cross cow and calf from J.E. and J.T. Evans and Son, Upper Cefnpenarth, with G.S. Mathias, Buarth Yr Oen, selling a Limousin cross cow and calf for £4,600.

Hampshire's sell to 1,800gns 

Trade at the inaugural show and sale of Hampshire Down Sheep at Lanark, held on behalf of the Scottish Club, topped at 1,800gns to achieve a clearance rate of 59%.

Sale leader was a ram lamb from the Graylen flock of Graham and Judith Galbraith, Kendal. By their home-bred ram, Graylen Quartermaster, the lamb is out of a 2019-born dam by Benniworth Rupert. It sold to Findlay Crocker, Speediehill, Perth.

At 1,350gns and topping the gimmer section was one from Bruce and Irene Steel's Stirlingb-based Powblack flock. By Powblack Gaelic Prine, and out of an Eastfortune Furlough 2022-born daughter, it also heads to Speediehill with Messrs Crocker who bought another gimmer from the same home at the same money. 

The day's reserve male champion, a ram lamb from David Taylor, Bridgehaugh, Earlston, sold for 1,100gns. A son of Bridgehaugh Quinn, out of a home-bred 2021-born Lumb Laird daughter, the buyers were I. and S. Clough, Pickering.

Another gimmer from Messrs Steel, this time by Eastfortune Furlough, made 1,000gns selling to Liz and Steven Brown's Caerlaverock flock, Dumfries.

Also at 1,000gns was a gimmer from Messrs Taylor. By 4,600gns Graylen Officer, it sold to Ian and Annette Dixon, Cantsfield, Carnforth.

Averages: 32 overall, £638.88; 2 shearling rams, £630; 5 ram lambs, £924; 14 gimmers, £721.50; 11 ewe lambs, £402.82.

Hexham stores sell to £2,700

At the final sale of store cattle in May at Hexham, a smaller, more mixed catalogue of largely beef bred cattle were forward from across the North of England and the Scottish Borders.

Trade peaked at £2,700 for a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Herdman, Luns House, Co Durham.

Aberdeen-Angus bullocks topped at £2,600 for one from Geoff Roddam, Blackcarts, who also sold strong Luing bullocks to £2,390.

Leading the best end of the mid-range and yearling aged cattle was a pen from Ian Crammond, Tow Law, which sold to a top of £2,300 for a Limousin bullock with another from Messrs Wood, Low Acton, selling for £2,280.  

A small number of cattle under 10 months old, topped at £1,720 and £1,660 for two, nine-month-old Limousin bulls from John Lamb, Wall. 

An entry of 231 cast ewes and tups topped at £230 for the first three sheep in the ring, some Texels from Messrs Dawson, Middle Houselope.

An entry of 115 ewes and hoggs with lambs at foot topped at £160/life for a pen of 10 Mule hoggs with 10 Texel cross lambs at foot from W.M. Reed and Sons, Westgate.

Older ewes sold to £135 for Texels from T. and K. Telfer, Demesne.

An entry of 97 store hoggs sold to a similar trade on the week, topping at £121 for a Texel cross hogg from T. Bean and Sons, Consett.

Lilleshall dispersal peaks at 5,000gns

The Lilleshall pedigree Holstein dispersal,  on behalf of S.M. Gilman and Partners,  Lilleshall, Newport, saw buyers assemble from across England and Wales at Shrewsbury.

Robotically milked, the herd was averaging 38 kilos per day with 305 day averages of 10,736kg at 4.2%butterfat, 3.5% protein and 120 cell count.

Topping the sale at 5,000gns was red heifer Lilleshall Shield Rae Red 11 which sold to S.B. Farms, Haverfordwest.

Second best price went to another red heifer, Lilleshall Elevated Rhapsody Red 5, which sold for 4,900gns to Obsidian Holsteins, Stafford.

One-month fresh Lilleshall Sheild Rae Red 8 made 4,600gns, bought by B. and E.L. Carr, Worcestershire.

Fourth lactation Peak Rubels Rhapsody, dam of Elevated Rhapsody, sold for 4,100gns and two fresh heifers from the Avis family, Lilleshall Rubels Avis B 55 86 and Lilleshall Elevated Avis B Red 56, also broke the 4,000gns barrier, both bought by S.B. Farms.

Dry cows peaked at 3,400gns for Lilleshall Sheild Rae Red 6, with more than 20 dry cows selling for 2,500gns or more.

In-calf heifers topped at 3,700gns for Lilleshall Mcdonald P Zandra 7, with bulling and maiden heifers also selling to a strong trade, with only four out of 62 selling for less than 1,000gns.

Averages: 203 cows and heifers in milk, £2,440; 40 dry cows, £2,619; 51 in-calf heifers, £2,497; 62 maiden and bulling heifers, £1,460; 72 "A" lot heifer calves, £674.

Spitfire sells to 6900gns at multi-breeds pedigree highlight

Sale leader at 6,900gns at the Lingfields multi-breed Beef Cattle Fair at Skipton was an October 2021-born Limousin bull, Garrowby Spitfire, from New York Farms, Silsden Moor. By Ampertaine Magnum, out of Gunnerfleet Nisensis, it sold to Tony Birkett, Carnforth.

Next at 6,800gns was another Limousin from Natasha Smalley's Rayhead herd, Bolton-by-Bowland. Rayhead Underdog, an April 2023-born son of Haltcliffe Memphis, out of Prietec Nessa,  found a new home with BWS Farming, Drighlington.

Making 5,000gns was the Aberdeen-Angus bull Glympton Edwin, from Kate Corner, Northallerton. By Glympton Ragnor, out of Glympton Eodima, it sold to Roland Carr, Bolton Abbey.

The single British Blue entry was a two-year-old bull from the Littlebank herd of Richard Maudsley and family, Rathmell, which sold for £4,500. Littlebank Tyson, by Sandyvale Jagerbomb, out of the home-bred Nikita, sold to Gavin Boocock, Stamford Bridge.

Also penned for sale were 56 head forming the Lingfields spring breeding cattle sale. The section's top of £3,450 went to a 2018-born Limousin cow with a British Blue bull calf at foot from Les Driver, Oakenshaw, Bradford. The buyer was G. Bretherton, Bury.
