Perthshire farmer and stand-up comedian takes his comedy show to north England

Jim Smith first diversified into stand up 12 years ago, having lived and worked on his family farm all his life his content is predominately a mix of jokes and anecdotes about rural and farming life

Perthshire farmer and stand-up comedian Jim Smith is taking his stand-up comedy show to the north of England in January.Ìý

Mr Smith, who first diversified into stand up 12 years ago will be performing at 6 different venues across the north.Ìý

The show, entitled ‘Prime Cuts' is a pick of Mr Smith's best bits which he has written and performed in Scotland over the past several yearsÌý

Having lived and worked on his family farm all his life his content isÌýpredominately aÌýmix of jokes and anecdotes about rural and farming lifeÌýmeaningÌýthe majority ofÌýhis audienceÌýare farmers and rural dwellers although he stresses it is suitable for ‘city slickers' too.Ìý

After discovering a passion for writing and performing sketches for his local young farmers club pantomimeÌýMr SmithÌýtook the plunge and performed his first 5 minutes of stand up at the famous Glasgow Stand's ‘ Red Raw' beginners night 13 years ago and has since went on to be a regular in the Scottish comedy club circuit, doing two Edinburgh Fringe Runs and two sell out tours of Scotland . He is also a regular panellist on BBC Radio Scotland's ‘BreakingÌýtheÌýNews' and in 2024 had a Radio 4 comedy series entitled ‘Me and the Farmer'.Ìý

Mr SmithÌýsaidÌý"IÌýamÌýdelighted to be getting the opportunity to take my comedy to England, itÌýisÌýlong overdue. My accent may beÌýdifferent,Ìýbut all the woes,ÌýcockupsÌýand funny scenarios are all the same in farming, regardless of where you live.ÌýÌý

"IÌýamÌýcurrently planning more gigs further south, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland and dates will be announced soon.Ìý

Mr SmithÌýhas recentlyÌýbeenÌýperforming comedy in the more remote areas of Scotland in association with the Scottish rural charity, RSABI, which he is an ambassador of as part of their ‘Keep Talking' mental health campaign.Ìý

"I think with all the uncertainty that there is in farming just now itÌýisÌýreally importantÌýfor farmers to get out for a night, especially in the winter months and get a chance to switch off for a few hours.ÌýÌý

"ItÌýisÌýnot just about being entertained and having aÌýlaugh,Ìýbut itÌýisÌýalso an opportunity to meet up with friends at the gig and get a blether.ÌýÌý

"IÌýamÌývery much looking forward to getting the ‘craic' with the audience."Ìý
