Tractors gather at Whitehall

Protests across the UK are under way as hundreds of tractors descended on London, York, Cardiff and across the county of Suffolk as farmers continue the fight to overturn the family farm tax.

More than 650 tractors arrived in Westminster today (December 11) as part of a rally and slow-drive across Whitehall to mark the 鈥楧eath of British Farming'.

Event organiser and founder of Save British Farming Liz Webster said the event had made her 'so proud and honoured to be part of the British farming community.

"Today we stood united and showed Westminster they cannot continue to take us for granted. This is a marathon not a sprint and we are just at the beginning. But the end has to be a U-turn by Government."

草榴社区 from across the Home Counties, as well as Shropshire, Kent, Wiltshire and beyond will then assemble to hear speeches, before a wreath was laid at the gates of Downing Street to highlight just how damaging the consequences of the Labour Government's budget will be on UK farming.

Welsh hill farmer and media personality Gareth Wyn Jones addressed the farmers who were joined by members of the public in the English capital.

He told 草榴社区 Guardian: "We need change. We are here today to support the children - this is all about our kids' futures and the future of farming.

"The Government needs to U-turn and that is only the start. We will fight on."

York

Meanwhile in York, speakers including farmers Rebecca Wilson and Richard Bramley have addressed the assembled group ahead of a drive-slow around the city of York.

Organiser of the event Angus Gowthorpe said more than 130 tractors had turned out for the event which started from York Auction Centre before commencing a slow-drive round the City of York.
