Ainstable leads Beltex sale
IT was the champion which went on to top the Beltex Sheep Society sale at Borderway, which was headed up by gimmers from Brian Hall's Ainstable flock, Carlisle.
Selling for the top price of 4,200gns to Messrs Hill, Shepton Mallet, was the champion, Ainstable Kind, an Ardstewart Hamish daughter, scanned with a single to 12,000gns Wannop's Kingsley.
Messrs Livingstone, Gretna, paid 3,500gns for Ainstable Kind ET, this time by Woodies Wicked and carrying a single to the Wannop's ram.听
At 3,200gns was Ainstable Kettle, by Black Jack Casanova, which sold to Messrs Wattie, Alford, carrying twins to Wannop's Kingsley.
Outwith the Ainstable production sale, the first prize ewe lamb, Lurg Love It by Mellor Vale King Kong, from Alan Miller, Inverurie, sold to Messrs MacGregor, Glasgow, for 2,000gns.听听

Centre record for pigs at Thirsk
A NEW centre record for pigs was set and then set again at the Christmas show and sale at Thirsk, where a total of 176 pigs were on offer.
The champion ticket was awarded to a pair of Pietrain cross gilts weighing 95kg from Matthew Watson, Bishop Auckland, which went on to sell for a centre record price of 拢394/head (415p/kg) to the judge, Stephen Taylor, Bambridge.
The record did not last long as the reserve champion, a pair of Large White cross gilts weighing 120kg from Phil Story, Saltburn by the Sea, went on to sell for 拢400/head (320p/kg) to Timm's Family Butchers, Pickering.

Prime cattle to 拢5,000 at Melton Mowbray
AT the Christmas show and sale at Melton Mowbray the prime cattle champion was a British Blue cross heifer from C. and G. Davies, which went on to make 拢5,000 (730p/kg), selling to Philip Menday, Bell Hotel, Winslow.
Champion bullock was a 760kg British Blue from T.A. Lyon, Bourne, which sold to Richard Taylor of Owen Taylor Butchers, Leabrooks, for 拢4,000 (526p/kg).
Champion animal led by a young farmer was a Limousin cross heifer from Gordon and Harry Amos, Leicester, which sold to Anthony Kitson, Northallerton, for 拢3,950.
The first ever Young Stockpersons Challenge Cup saw 20 youngsters buy cattle in the spring and bring back to sell. Champion was a 750kg Limousin cross bullock from Josh Ketley, Colchester, which sold for 拢4,350 to L. Brown and Son, Lincoln, resulting in the largest profit margin of 拢1,150.
Reserve champion was a heifer from Ben Ketley, Colchester, which went to the same buyer for 拢4,000.
Leading the prime lamb show was a trio of 58kg Beltex from David Wadland, Aston le Walls, which sold to the judge, Mr Taylor, for 拢430/head.
Mr Taylor also bought the reserve trio, 42kg Beltex from J.F. Burbidge and Sons, Stamford, for 拢220/head.
Champion in the pig section was a duo from Mike and Luke Fane, Saxilby, which sold to Billy Burton Meats, Essex, for 拢430.
Reserve was a brace of 143kg pigs from A. and P. Schofield, Owesby, which sold for 拢260/head.

Champion makes top price at Hexham
A BRITISH Blue cross heifer from Ian and Nathan Grainger, Wigton, led the way at the Christmas show and sale at Hexham when it secured the champion ticket as well as top price.
Selling to the judge, J. Fawcett, on behalf of Kitson Butchers, Yarm, the heifer realised 605p/kg.
In reserve was the Young 草榴社区 winner from Rachael Graham, Brampton. This Limousin cross heifer sold for the top gross price of 拢3,965 (603.5p/kg).
The winning steer was a Limousin cross from Miss Graham's family farm, which sold for 439.5p/kg to Ashfold Quality Meats, Rochdale.
A pure Limousin cow from J. Smith-Jackson, Haydon Bridge, led the cast cattle entry at 397.5p/kg, selling to the judge, Granville Moore, Hawick.
Champion cow was a Limousin cross from R.R. Reay and Son, Matfen, that sold for 拢3,151.06 (389.5p/kg) to I. Llyr, Ruthin.
There were 36 pens of three lambs presented for judging by Mr Morgan, Helliwell, who awarded the championship to a pen of Texel crosses from G.R. Hindmarsh, Morpeth, which he went on to buy for 拢300/head (555.6p/kg).
Reserve went to a trio of Beltex crosses from Messrs Reay and Walton, Hexham, which realised 拢205/head (436.2p/kg).

Leading lambs hit 拢990 at Cockermouth
BACKING his decision, judge Mr Alam bought his champion pair of lambs for 拢990/head at the Christmas show and sale at Cockermouth, to sell through Lancashire Direct Halal Meats.
The pair of Texels were from Ted Skelton, Maryport, who also presented the reserve pair in the shape of Beltex that sold to David Walker, on behalf of a client, for 拢690/head.
Cast sheep sold to 拢290/head, for Texels from R. and E. Campbell, Cockermouth.
The Christmas show and sale of cast cattle saw the first-prize beef cow, a British Blue from from Messrs Lamb, Seascale, take the top price of 333.5p/kg or 拢2,397.87.
Cast bulls reached 401.5p/kg for a Limousin from Messrs Taylor and Gill, Cockermouth, with another from the same home at 拢2,734.80.

Blue Texels take top honours at Dumfries
A PAIR of Blue Texels from Mandy Graham, Brampton, secured the top ticket and top price at the Christmas show and sale at Dumfries.
The 60kg duo sold to S. Dawkins for 拢300/head.
Ms Graham also claimed the reserve honours with 60kg Zwartbles cross Blue Texel lambs that sold for 拢230/head to Border Meats.
Outwith the show, all classes showed an improvement in trade to average 313.38p/kg.
Cast sheep reached 拢335/head for Texel rams from Glenkiln Farms, and with ewes to 拢218/head for heavy Texels from Messrs Ewart.

Records smashed at Bentham
THE champion pair of lambs at Bentham's Christmas show and sale went on to set a new centre record of 拢1,000/head (拢15.87kg).
This was for the leading 63kg Beltex cross lambs from A.L. Thompson, Foulridge, which sold to M. Alam, Lancashire Direct Halal Meat.
Messrs Thompson also consigned the reserve pair, 45kg Beltex crosses, which made 拢340/head听 (拢7.55/kg).
Leading price in the calf section of 拢990 was for the reserve champion, a British Blue bull from Ken Polkinghorne, Eldroth.
The champion, a Blue heifer from Messrs Gibbons, Preston, sold to the judge, Dawn Huck, Burneside, for 拢800.听听
