NFU Scotland calls off Day of Unity events due to Storm Eowyn

NFU Scotland has announced it has made the decision to postpone all planned rally events across the whole of Scotland.Ìý

President Martin Kennedy said: "It is clear Storm Eowyn has left a trail of devastation across much of the country.Ìý We have assessed the situation and taken the tough decision to postpone all our planned events across Scotland that had been arranged as part of the UK National Day of Action and designed to highlight the negative impact the UK Government's proposed changes to inheritance tax will have on family farms across the UK and the wider food supply chain.

"We want to spread the word as far as possible to our members and all those who were planning to attend and support our cause at these events, that the rallies have been postponed until further notice.Ìý Ongoing weather warnings and respect for those involved with the clean-up operations are key factors in our decision.

"The country has faced widespread destruction and inconvenience today in what has been billed ‘the storm of a century'.Ìý

"While our rallies are carefully planned not to cause any unnecessary disruption to the public, we want the focus tomorrow to be on the clear up that now faces us.Ìý Many of our members will be playing a key role in supporting that operation in rural communities across Scotland, as they do so often in crisis situations.

"I would like to thank everyone for their understanding especially to those who have organised these events.

"Events will still take place in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.Ìý We will be supporting these events and ask our NFU Scotland members and fellow campaigners to do so online on Saturday January 25 using the hashtag #StopTheFamilyFarmTax."
