Limousin takes top honors at the Royal Welsh Show

It was the Limousin champion Grahams Ruth, a three-year-old cow from Robert and Jean Graham, Bridge of Allan, Stirling which clinched the overall beef inter-breed title.Ìý

Brought out byÌýLynsey Bett, the home-bred Claragh Franco daughter was shown with Trixie, its October-born heifer calf at foot.Ìý

This is the second Royal inter-breed win for the outfit after taking the same title at the Royal Highland title earlier this summer.Ìý

She was also part of the winning team in the Fitzhugh pairs with Dinmore Perfection from Mr Dawes, Hereford. Ìý

The reserve inter-breed place was snapped up by the Simmental, Brandane Millie, exhibited by Finley Soutter, Leistershire, aged 17.Ìý

The February-2021 heifer isÌýby Sterling Gino and out of Sterling Candys and was boughtÌýprivately by Mr Soutter for 15,000gns as the foundation female for his newly established Millennium herd. MillieÌýwas bred by well-known breeder and stockman Jimmy McMillan, Bury St Edmunds.Ìý

Also making the final line-up was the Welsh Black champion, Machreth Sian 49, an April 2021-born heiferÌýby Ynysfor Emlyn 5 and out of Machreth Sian 40 from Eirian Lewis, Ceredigion.Ìý

Yarn Hill Acora was pulled forward asÌýLincoln Red champion. Exhibited by Iken Hall Farms, which made the journey all the way from Ipswich, the January 2022-born heifer is by Walmer Yara.Ìý

Representing the British BluesÌýin the final six was Solway View Rhubarb shown byÌýAlastair Jackson and exhibited by Kevin Watret, Dumfries. The September 2012-born heifer is home-bred on both sides, being by Solway View Odin and out of Solway View Katie.Ìý

The Hereford champion was the bull, Solpoll 1 Trailblazer, from the Bowen family, Glamorgan, who also won the title here in 2019.ÌýÌýThe bull was bought privately in February 2021 at 14 monthsÌýold from John and William McMordie, Northern Ireland, for £10,000. The son of Solpoll 1 Promoter, which was imported from Canada as an embryo, was inter-breed champion at Shropshire Show and reserve at the Bath and West.ÌýÌýÌýÌý

Taking the Charolais championship on his Royal Welsh show debut was Sean Mitchell, Penrith, withÌý Harestone Rapunzel.ÌýÌý
The March 2020-born cow was shown with its heifer calf at foot and is back in-calf to Barnsford Ferny which was Royal Welsh inter-breed champion 10 years ago. It was second at the Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire shows this season.Ìý
Reserve champion went to the Knighton based, Corbett family with Teme Stardust.Ìý
The home-bred two-year-old heifer is a daughter of Barnsford FernyÌýout of Teme Magnolia, which was breed champion at the show in 2018.ÌýÌý

In-calf to Lochend Shell, it was inter-breed champion at Royal Three Counties and reserve inter-breed champion at Shropshire County Show earlier in the year as well as a class winner at the national Charolais show at the Great Yorkshire Show.Ìý

These were both part of the winning team of five competition beating 11 other breeds. They were joined by Breos T Rex from Messrs Evans, Glamorgan, Moelfre Nana from the Moelfre herd, Gaerfyrddin and Moelfre Silk from Kevin and Sioned Thomas, Gaerfyrddin.Ìý

Tuesday saw the commercial beef judged by showring regular, Tudor Edwards, Corwen, who was looking for style, balance and locomotion. The overall commercial championship was taken by first-time Royal Welsh exhibitor, James Nesbit, Ayrshire. His Limousin heifer, Starlight by Gallaber Leo was boughtÌýfrom Patley Bridge market in February and also claimed the championship at the Royal Highland Show.Ìý


The reserve heifer champion, Miss Bala stepped into the overall reserve spot. The May 2022-born, CharollaisÌýheifer was bred by Messrs Mills and exhibited by Messrs Roberts, Gwynedd. Ìý

In the baby beef section, Herefordshire breeders, Colin and Wendy Phillips familyÌýtook the championship title with their September 2022-born heifer, Red Ribbon by Ballyrickard Pluto and shown by their son, Owen.Ìý
